A practical 3-step process for any field team. No specialist lab training required for routine screening.
Composite sampling: Collect 5–10 sub-samples in a W-pattern or grid; mix well before testing.
Depth: Sample at the relevant depth (e.g., 0–15 cm for topsoil, 0–30 cm for subsoil depending on purpose).
Cross-contamination: Use clean tools between each sampling point; dry before reuse.
Timing: Avoid sampling immediately after irrigation, rainfall, or fertiliser application — allow 48–72 hrs for representative results.
Labelling: Record GPS coordinates, depth, date, sampler name, and test objective on every sample bag.
Detection ranges, calibration requirements, storage guidance, PPE notes — everything a field team needs to use kits confidently and safely.
| Parameter | Detection Range | Typical Accuracy | Method | Limitation Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Soil pH | 3.5 – 9.5 | ±0.2 units | Electrode / Indicator | Calibrate daily; soil texture affects reading |
| EC / Salinity | 0 – 20 mS/cm | ±3% FS | Conductimetric | Temperature compensation required |
| Soil Moisture | 0 – 100% VWC | ±2–5% VWC | Capacitance probe | Soil type calibration may be needed |
| Nitrate-N | 0 – 200 ppm | ±10% of value | Colorimetric strip/vial | High organic matter can interfere |
| Phosphate-P | 0 – 100 ppm | ±10–15% | Molybdenum blue | Extract preparation critical for accuracy |
| Potassium-K | 0 – 300 ppm | ±10% | Flame / colorimetric | Cation exchange capacity affects result |
| Heavy Metals (Pb, Cd, As) | Detection limit varies | Indicative only | Colorimetric vial / strip | Lab ICP-MS required for regulatory compliance |
| Sulfate | 0 – 5000 mg/kg | ±10% | Turbidimetric / strip | Interference from high chloride possible |
Store reagents in a cool, dry location (15–25°C), away from direct sunlight and heat. Moisture-sensitive strips must be resealed immediately after use. Check expiry on every reagent pack before use. Typical shelf life: 6–18 months from manufacture date. Do not store kits in vehicle glove boxes or direct sun.
Wear nitrile gloves when handling reagents. Use safety goggles with any acid or oxidising reagents. Heavy metal screening vials may contain reagents hazardous on contact — refer to the SDS supplied with each kit. Work in ventilated areas. Keep reagents away from food and children. Wash hands after testing.
Calibrate pH meters at the start of each session with 2-point buffer solutions (pH 4.0 and 7.0). EC meters require a conductivity standard calibration check weekly or when temperature changes significantly. Run a positive control standard each testing session. Log all calibration data in the field record. Recalibrate if drift exceeds ±0.3 pH or ±5% EC.
Dispose of spent colorimetric solutions by diluting with large volumes of water and neutralising to pH 6–9 before draining to a permitted outlet. Heavy metal screening vials and strips must be collected as chemical waste per CPCB/SPCB guidelines — do not dispose to open drain. Consult site EHS officer for site-specific disposal requirements.
Important limitation: All portable soil kits are screening tools providing indicative results. They are not substitutes for laboratory analysis. For regulatory submissions, litigation support, environmental compliance, or any result that will influence a significant decision, always confirm with Cleanflo's accredited laboratory for certified, defensible test reports.
Kits alone don't deliver value — trained operators do. Cleanflo provides full lifecycle support for every soil testing program.
Cleanflo specialists train your team in correct sample collection techniques, kit use, extract preparation, result interpretation, and data logging. Practical field demonstrations and printed SOPs included. Training delivered in local language where requested.
Written standard operating procedures (SOPs) and reference charts are supplied with every kit. Video guides are available for key kit procedures. WhatsApp and email technical helpline for field troubleshooting and result interpretation support.
Quarterly or monthly replenishment subscriptions ensure you never run out of reagents, strips, calibration standards, or sample bags. Delivered to your site or office on a pre-agreed schedule. Bulk pricing available for large programs.
Annual meter calibration service, supply of fresh buffer and calibration standards, and meter maintenance. Extended warranty and annual maintenance contracts (AMC) available for corporate and bulk kit programs. Instrument servicing and replacement available.
Recommended workflow: Use portable soil kit for rapid field screening → log in site data sheet → send critical or borderline samples to Cleanflo's in-house laboratory for confirmatory testing and certified reporting.
When to always send to lab: Results near regulatory threshold limits; heavy metal screening positive indicators; pre-remediation baseline surveys; litigation or dispute support; environmental compliance reports; Phase 2 ESA confirmation; any result that will influence a significant project or investment decision.
Chain-of-custody: Label samples clearly with site name, sample ID, GPS coordinates, depth, date, time, sampler name, and parameters required. Use Cleanflo sample submission forms for traceability. Samples should be sealed in appropriate containers and stored cool until dispatch.
Turnaround: Turnaround time depends on the number and type of analyses required — provided on request with your sample submission confirmation. Priority turnaround options may be available for urgent compliance situations.
Submit samples: Contact our lab team to arrange sample pickup or courier logistics, or visit our Laboratory & Testing page for submission guidelines and collection points.

An agronomy advisor used the NPK Kit across 20 field zones before the sowing season. Phosphate levels were found to be already adequate in 12 zones — saving the farmer over 40% of planned fertiliser expenditure while maintaining target yields.
A site engineer used the Geotechnical Soil Kit during subgrade survey and detected elevated sulfate levels in a 300m road section. Sulfate-resistant concrete was specified for that section — preventing potential concrete degradation that could have caused costly early repair.
An environmental consultant used the Contaminated Land Triage Kit across a decommissioned factory site to identify 4 high-priority hotspot zones among 22 sampling points. Only hotspot samples were sent to the laboratory — reducing lab spend by 65% while maintaining a robust investigation approach.
